Weekend of Wonder: Goals by Matthew Taylor and Michael Essien

By: Bob | December 11th, 2006

Whoever the first person was to coin the term “wonder goal” will be getting some extra royalties after this weekend’s action in the English Premier League. The newspapers are full of wonder goal talk and with good reason; this was a weekend of wonder. If you need any clarification about what makes a goal worthy of the wonder label, check out the two long-range strikes in the videos below. Both are so sweet that I can’t even begin to decide which is better.

Michael Essien – Chelsea vs. Arsenal, December 10, 2006

Matthew Taylor – Portsmouth vs. Everton, December 9 2006

Tim Howard's arms never leave his side during the Taylor goal.

The Taylor goal is a thing of beauty but much credit to Essien for that strike and for making a thrilling game to watch that much more thrilling.

  • Brian

Taylor's strike was pure brilliance... It certainly was a great weekend for quality goals. Luis Garcia's header and Mark Gonzalez's free kick were both superb as well.

  • Nice goals. I like the second better. More spectacular.

  • Nes

Both very sweet, but I like the second one better. There!
