Advantage Bordeaux for 2008/9?

By: Daryl | August 3rd, 2008

Even Lyon fans might have to admit that their team’s dominance of Ligue 1 is getting silly. They’ve won the last seven French titles. Which is a lot. They had also won every French Champions Trophy (pre-seasonish league winner vs cup winners game) from 2002 to 2007.

And for the 2008/9 French Champions Trophy, Lyon faced Ligue 1 runners-up Bordeuax, because Lyon themselves had won both the league and cup in 2007/8.

But (admittedly small piece of) good news for variety fans is that for the first time since 2001, Lyon did not win the Champions Trophy. Bordeaux won it on spot kicks after a goalless draw (video of pens above, LiveBlog of the game here).

Not sure that Bordeaux’s win really means anything. But they did pull Lyon back to within four points last season, and apparently Lyon’s Hugo Lloris was much the busier. So perhaps Bordeaux taking the first silverware of the season is a sign of a more competitive Ligue 1 this season.

I don’t know how seriously people should take this result. Lyon were missing seven first team players, and due to so many internationals that were away until mid-July, the squad has had a shorter pre-season than Bordeaux.

It’s the super cup, not serious at all. That being said this will be the first year Lyon will have to battle with a team that’s consistently built a challenge in years.
