Citius, Altius, Fortius: Olympique Lyon 5-5 Olympique Marseille
By: Jan | November 8th, 2009Ligue 1’s much hyped Clasico did not produce much, except for a few H1N1 antibodies. Meanwhile, the yet unnamed battle of the Olympienes (Olympico maybe?) only needed about 12 minutes to turn from a hotly anticipated into a great game. Another 12 minutes on the other end, turned what was then already a fantastic game into The Game of the Century! – and Ligue 1’s lawyers will make sure bloggers never forget the exclamation mark, when referring to it in the future. This match singlehandedly upped the goals per game ratio of Ligue 1 for this season and temporarily reduced the vocabulary of the participants of our live-blog over at the Ligue 1 Offside to: amazing, wow, wowow, nononon, lololol, whoa, yessss and what a game. Which, judging by the highlights, sums up the game quite well.
Another way to do it – simple and beautiful:
1 – 0 Miralem Pjanic (3rd)
1 – 1 Souleymane Diawara (12th)
2 – 1 Sidney Govou (14th)
2 – 2 Benoit Cheyrou (44th)
2 – 3 Bakari Koné (47th)
2 – 4 Brandão (78th)
3 – 4 Lisandro López (81st)
4 – 4 Lisandro López (84th)
5 – 4 Michel Bastos (90th)
5 – 5 Jeremy Toulalan (90th OG)
This is sure to be the favorite for the Prix Coup de Coeur du Jury for the best match – that is, should The Offside ever decide to hand out awards at the end of the season.

Oh and Marseille’s first goal was by Souleymane Diawara, and the last one was an OG by Jeremy Toulalan.

Oops, thanks Sam. Fixed.

What’s really disturbing is that these ten goals come to you via France’s top two goalkeepers. Going into the World Cup Qualifying second round, no less.

Well, to Mandanda’s credit, all of Lyon’s goals were pretty much unstoppable.

if 2 of the top 3 teams from last year both concede 5 goals in one match, you wonder about the defence…and the goalkeeping from a certain Lloris
