Death, Taxes, Lyon

01_Lyon_Fred.jpgFriday marks the beginning of the Ligue 1 season in France and the beginning of another Lyon run towards a championship. The past five seasons have all seen Lyon lift the trophy at the end and this season should be no different.

Lyon won the league by 15 points last season and made the rest of the teams look about as talented as my men’s league team (we are mid-table thank you very much).

This year’s Lyon squad is largely the same with a couple of additions in the midfield – Kim Kallstrom and Jeremy Toulalan. The team is still trying to pursue another forward or two to compliment everyone’s favorite Brazilian, the man named Fred.

Even without any additions, Lyon should walk away with the title – a sixth straight domestic league championship, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished before in France or in any of the big European leagues.

This would be a remarkable feat in this day of player transfers and parity.

Here’s a preview of the French season.
