France Has A New King: Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux.

By: chris | May 30th, 2009

Lyon lost their kung-fu grip on the Ligue 1 trophy some ways back and a new champion was always inevitable, but that doesn’t make it less of a story. Bordeaux beat Caen 1-0 to take home the title and send their opponents tumbling down to Ligue 2. Their first title in 10 years and the first team not named Olympique Lyonnais to win since 2001. A big day for French football to say the least.

But while congratulations are due Bordeaux, Caen might not be tipping their hats just yet. No, they’ll be blaming the American delegates – Obama is visiting soon – who forced them out of their normal hotel into one miles away after one of said delegates checked in with both luggage and swine flu. Further fueling the theory that America ruins everything.

    Congratulations to Bordeaux.

But let’s also salute the outgoing champs! What they accomplished over the last few years was no easy task. I would have loved to see them do better in Europe though.

Lyon played positive football and any true football fan should appreciate that.

Best of luck to Bordeaux in Europe.
