Ribery, Equalite, Fraternite
By: Bob | August 7th, 2006
What is it with the players who played for France in this year’s World Cup? First there is William Gallas not showing up for Chelsea’s training camp in the United States. Now there is Franck Ribery who was absent from Marseille’s 0-0 draw against Sedan on Sunday.
On Friday, Ribery made it clear that he has a future, but it isn’t with Marseille. The 23-year-old, who has already played for Boulogne-sur-Mer, Ales, Brest, Metz and Galatasaray in his short, but well-traveled career, has an unknown destination in mind.
“My wish is to leave Marseille,” said Ribery. “I want to play in the Champions League. The Marseille club officials know where I want to go and the club I wish to sign for also know it. “My choice is made and I will not go back. Now both clubs have to reach an agreement.”
Lyon, Arsenal, and Manchester United are all reported to be after Ribery and there are some reports that his move to Real Madrid in a done deal.
Ribery was one of the best players in the World Cup in my opinion and while I can see why he would want to move to a bigger club, pulling this type of move as the French Ligue kicks off after previously saying he was happy in Marseille smells of opportunism to me. He’ll probably get his way.

Ribery is definitely one of the best players to have emerged from this edition. Hope he does better justice to his potential by moving to a better club. Its nice to see a simple hard running down to earth footballer in this era of flash and glamour.
