Chivas to Set Record for Longest Football Game

Ever since I was a little tyke and my parents gave me a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records and I saw the picture of the man who set the record for the most cigarettes smoked at one time, I have always been a bit intrigued by people who set crazy records. As Dar, our man on the Mexico Offside points out, the Mexican club Chivas is aiming to set a world record by playing a continuous game of football for 101 hours. It would be more impressive if they fielded the same players for 4 straight days and forced them to also set the smoking while playing, but that probably is against the labor laws these days.

With Benfica locking up the record for most supporters, what other football records are there out there for those who aspire to Guinness greatness? Here is a sampling of some of the Guinness records that have your name written all over them.

Martinho Eduardo Orige (Brazil) juggled a regulation soccer ball for 19 hr 30 min non-stop with feet, legs and head without the ball ever touching the ground at Padre Ezio Julli Gym in Araranguá, Brazil on August 2-3 2003.

The most touches of a football in one minute, by a female, whilst keeping the ball in the air is 269 by Tasha-Nicole Terani (USA) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on September 4, 2003.

Largest Human Logo: On July 24, 1999 a total of 34,309 people organized by Realizar Eventos Especias, gathered at the National Stadium of Jamor, Lisbon, Portugal, to create the Portuguese logo for Euro2004, as part of the successful Portuguese bid to UEFA to hold the European football championships in 2004.

The record for the greatest distance traveled forward rolling by a team in one hour is 9,092.4 m (29,830.7 ft) and was set by a team of 12 (all German) in Stadtlauringen, Germany on May 12, 2002.
