By: Bob | November 30th, 2006
It is always a passionate and intense affair when America and Chivas square off. On Thursday night the two most successful clubs in Mexican football will meet again in the latest rendition of El Clasico de Clasicos – the derby of derbies. This rivalry might not be as well known to football fans around the world as the Old Firm in Scotland or the Superclasico in Argentina, but in Mexico it is the real deal.
Club America is a Mexico City team that has won 14 league titles. Chivas (Goats) is from Guadalajara and has 10 league titles to their name. The two teams attract fans from well beyond their respective cities.
Chivas leads the all-time series with 49 wins and 48 draws, while Club America has walked away victorious 46 times. Chivas has not lost in its last five matches against Club America and most recently won 2-0 back in September.
Thursday’s meeting has added significance in that it is the first of a two-match semifinal series in the Apertura tournament. The series winner will move on and have the chance to add to their league titles. The loser goes home.
The crowd will be crazy. The players will be fired up. If you get a chance to watch this clasico, you won’t be disappointed.
