Mexican Goal Celebrations Unmasked
By: Bob | August 14th, 2006
When Ecuador’s Ivan Kaviedes scored against Costa Rica in the World Cup, his goal celebration was one of the most bizarre and touching things in the entire tournament. You’ll recall that Kaviedes pulled a mask out of his shorts and put it on his head following his goal. The celebration was a tribute to a teammate who was killed in a car crash.
Kaviedes is not alone in employing a mask as part of a goal celebration. The Mexican Football Federation announced this past week that players will no longer be allowed to wear masks as part of their goal celebrations.
Who knew that this was such an epic problem?
The wrestling mask apparently holds a much vaunted place in Mexican society, as well in movie theaters near you. The Offside officially condemns this decision by the Mexican football authorities and we would encourage players in Mexico to protest by wearing wrestling masks for the full 90. We’d certainly tune in if they did.
