Sometimes, It’s About More Than The Manager

By: Rob | September 13th, 2009

That there, is Deportivo Guadalajara (or the Chivas as they are nicknamed) losing 4-0 against San Luis. What followed, is this: The Chivas parted company with Francisco Ramirez, their third manager this year. He had taken over from Omar Arellano who was sacked after just three games in charge. He had taken over from Efrain Flores who was axed back in March.

While I won’t profess to know a whole lot about Mexican Football, you do sometimes have to question the wisdom of accepting the resignation of a manager who has only been in charge for 11 matches.

His record is poor, for sure. 2 Wins in 11 games is pretty bad going by anyone’s standard. But I would suggest that perhaps there are other problems – like the fact there is no managerial consistency for a start.

It goes for everyone as well, managers are always the fall guy, but while they have to take some of the responsibility, sometimes you have to to question exactly how at fault they generally are. There are 11 players out on the pitch, and while they have to be put in the right system, and motivated in the right way by the manager and so on, they still have to perform. It seems that alot of the time they go relatively blameless next to the manager. How many managers do you sack before you start to look at other factors?

There are lots of reasons for a team failing, and just sometimes, it isn’t always the managers fault.

All managers need to get a long time before fans even protesting.

I support Barnsley, and we recently sacked a manager. After 3 seasons.

Thats the only way to do it.

Paco Ramirez came under weird circumstances. Omar Arellano was named coach and 1 week later he was fired to make way for Paco. I think many of the young players held a grudge for that. One of them was his son after all.

Last year, the Brazilian team GrĂªmio fired their manager Vagner Mancini after just six matches, and they hadn’t even lost a game — it was four wins and two draws.
