A First Look at Freddy Adu at Manchester United

After much hype and much speculation, Freddy Adu has started a two-week trial with Manchester United. I wonder if he’ll have to return the shirt if he isn’t offered a contract. Hopefully we will receive hour-by-hour reports about what he eats, where he sleeps,how he gets along with Rooney, Ronaldo and the gang, and whether he challenges anyone to a game of hoops. Not everyone is excited by Adu’s decision to run about with the Premiership leaders, however. Adu’s flirtations with Man U have been publicly questioned by his DC United coach Peter Nowak.

Nowak is right. Even if Adu gets a contract from Man U he likely won’t see playing time for a couple of years. I don’t see how this can help his development as a player. He should consider taking the path of someone like DMB who went to the Dutch league first and was able to earn valuable playing time.
