An All-Star Soccer Match Fiasco
By: Bob | August 3rd, 2006
The concept of an all-star match is pretty cool. Bring together the best players from a league, let them play against one another and see some amazing play. The logic being that the best players will lead to the best action.
The reality, however, is often different. You have players that are out there to not get hurt, teams that have no cohesion because they aren’t used to playing with one another and the game usually turns out to be little more than a competition for who can come up with the flashiest individual play.
All of these are reasons why I more likely than not will not tune into to watch Major League Soccer’s all-star game this Saturday despite proclamations that this will be “the most competitive game in American professional sports.”
The collection of stars from the United States’ top league - including such household names as Ronnie O’Brien, Josh Gros and Eddie Robinson - will be in Chicago to take on Chelsea, a team that itself is a collection of stars from around the world. Chelsea is in the midst of its preseason training and has been focusing hard on partying with politicians and rappers and the development of team chemistry.
If I were a betting man, and please shoot me if I ever bet on an all-star game, I’d say that this game will be played in front of a large crowd, it will end in a draw, the television ratings will be less than that of an informercial and both sides will come away saying they were happy to be part of the gala.
Happy if they are able to escape the halftime entertainment, which features Lupe Fiasco, an ominous last name to associate with any event.

Lupe Fiasco is a good rapper. Although, I’m not sure he’s the right man for a halftime show.
