Beckham Heading to Milan Again. But Will He Be Back? I Say Yes.

By: Daryl | October 30th, 2009

beckham ac milanDavid Bcekham’s loan move from LA Galaxy to Milan will apparently be announced in the next few hours. It may have already happened by the time you read this.

In the words of Milan VP Adriano Galliano:

“The agreement for David Beckham has been completed. In a few hours we and Galaxy will officially announce this deal … We are just waiting for the very last documents but I confirm that he will return to Milan.”

Anyone else experiencing déjà vu?

There are subtle differences between this time and last though.

This time the focus is on the World Cup, and Beckham playing at a Fabio-Capello-approved level of football in order to make England’s World Cup 2010 squad.

This time it looks like the deal will be a straight January to June loan, rather than the January to March “I’ll be back for the start of MLS 2009, honest!” deal that was controversially extended earlier this year.

Maybe most importantly, Beckham has the chance to leave on a good note this time. After the boos that greeted Beckham’s sheepish return to MLS this summer, he finished the regular season with a standing ovation from LA Galaxy fans. Even better, there’s a post-season for the Galaxy to look forward to, with stadium-sharing rivals Chivas USA their first opponents in the playoffs. It’s not unthinkable for Beckham and Galaxy to go all the way this year, and for Beckham to head off to Milan with a winners medal.

The only question is: Will he be back? Rumour has it that Beckham’s contract with Galaxy allows him to opt-out and leave at the end of his third year, though it’s not clear exactly how accurate that is. My guess is he’ll play six months in Milan, go to the World Cup and make a few cameos for England, then do the realistic thing and retire from international football. The lack of pressure to play for England should result in a more settled return to MLS to spend his final two seasons with Galaxy. Anyone see it going differently?

cant say i follow mls too much to be honest, but i think the whole doha conflict will decide it. if he doesnt throw a fit about not being able to go with the england squad to qatar, i think he’s in it for the long run of the galaxy (it could potentially be his last match for them so if he wanted to throw a strap, he could).

I hadn’t seen this posted yet, so I will comment here. With Beckham going to Europe to play during the MLS offseason and now with Blanco going back to Mexico to play during the offseason the question is does the MLS suffer from when they play? It seems like the MLS might be missing out on players specifically b/c of when the MLS season is played? If that is the case would it benefit MLS or USMNT to change when the MLS season plays?
