Columbus Coach Sigi Schmid Wins His 100th Match

By: Laurie | April 29th, 2008

schmid.jpgTrivia question: Who was the first coach to win 100 MLS matches?

(**Answer at the bottom.**)

But who was the second? None other than Sigi Schmid, currently coach of the Columbus Crew. He reached the milestone this past weekend in the Crew’s 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo.

Congratulations, Sigi!

Of course, not all of those wins came with the Crew. Schmid was the coach who guided the LA Galaxy to the US Open Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2001, the MLS Cup in 2002, and the Supporter’s Shield in 1998 and 2002. This, of course, led to him being fired in 2004, when the Galaxy were in first place. Such are the ways of Galaxy owners AEG and MLS.

He then went on to coach the US U-20s before landing at Columbus in 2006.

The best Sigi Schmid quote I’ve seen comes from the game against DC United two weeks ago:

“I was never worried. There was a German pope in town who gave a German Mass. With me being a German coach, I was never worried at all.”

It always helps to have friends in high places.

**The first coach with 100 wins? Bob Bradley, the current USMNT coach.
