Freddy Adu to Reading. Well, maybe….
By: Bob | September 27th, 2006
The much hyped and largely underwhelming American media-created soccer sensation Freddy Adu could be making a move from Major League Soccer’s DC United to the English Premiership’s Reading if, and this is always a big if, you are to believe reports in today’s edition of The Sun.
According to the paper, Reading is trying to get Adu on a six-month loan from January with a view to a five-million-pound permanent deal next summer. All of this would be contingent on MLS approving the deal and as we have seen in the past the cartel masquerading as a league is not always so quick to sign their players away, especially those that are considered their marquee draws.
Adu has long been rumored with clubs in England, but this is the first time Reading’s name has been thrown into the mix. The recently promoted side has a pair of Americans on their roster already, Bobby Convey and Marcus Hahnemann.
By plunking down that much money for Adu, Reading would be taking a big risk in our opinion. At just 17, Adu has developed into an above average player in MLS, but the verdict is still out on whether he can compete at a higher level. Reading would not be paying for his current talent but for his potential, a risky proposition for a club that is not exactly known for its free spending ways.
All of this might be a moot point if in fact our friends over at Goal.com are correct about FIFA’s transfer rules for youth. What isn’t in question is that some day Adu will move on from DC United. It is just a matter of where and when and whether he will live up to the hype.

Reading have broken their transfer record in each of the last 3 seasons, although the 5 million would shatter the current mark of the 1.5 million they paid for Seol Ki-Hyeon. I think MLS will probably stupidly turn down that kind of fee for Adu. Besides, Josmer Altidore has been looking good for the Red Bulls lately and he’s younger than Adu.
