MLS Becomes a Teenager Tomorrow
By: Daryl | March 28th, 2008
Those adult European leagues better watch out, because MLS becomes a teenager tomorrow. The 2008 season is MLS’s thirteenth, so the league will notice some changes to its body (expansion to San Jose) hair in strange places (like Ben Olsen’s face) and and a sudden interest in the opposite sex (hallo WUSA.) There will also be violent mood swings (Beckham is brilliant! Beckham is rubbish!) and occasional petulance (Landon Donovan.)
Like any teenager, MLS 2008 will be a little annoying and full of itself, but worth keeping an eye on just in case it does something interesting. It will continue to rebel against authority (FIFA international dates be damned!) will stay up late on schoolnights (Thursdays on ESPN2) and will spend all it’s pocket money at once (splashing out on DPs.) We’ll also be waiting to see how well it mixes with others (in the 2008 Superliga, for example.)
But it’s definitely a great thing that MLS is heading towards maturity. When the league started back in 1996 there was no guarantee it would last this long, so for all the complaints people have with MLS (plastic pitches, no promotion/relegation) most football fans should be able to see MLS enter its teenage years and feel like a proud parent.

Well written Daryl (great pic choice as well).
Tipping my glass to continued MLS, and unfortunate, social inadequacy.
I still feel that US nerds will sometime prevail.
