MLS Cup Final: Houston Dynamo vs. New England Revolution
By: Bob | November 6th, 2006
It was another weekend of MLS playoff soccer and another weekend of fairly exciting action. The New England Revolution, a team that I picked to lose both of its playoff series, took care of business on the road to defeat DC United in the Eastern Conference final. Taylor Twellman, one of the least enjoyable players to watch, demonstrated why he is one of the best strikers in the league by putting home the game’s lone goal and eliminating a United team that finished with the best record during the regular season.
In the Western Conference final, the Houston Dynamo came back from an early deficit to defeat the thugs from Colorado 3-1. Paul Dalglish, the son of former Scottish international Kenny Dalglish, scored a brace in the win in front of an impressive 23,000 fans in Houston.
This sets up a final next weekend that pits two teams who finished second in their respective conferences during the regular season. New England has never won the MLS Cup and the majority of their players were on the losing end of the final last year against the LA Galaxy (Beckham alert!). Houston captured the MLS Cup back in 2003 when the franchise was located in San Jose. They should have the home field advantage with the game being played down the road in Dallas, unless the local fans decide to come out in force to cheer against the Dynamo.
I’ve picked against New England all along and for Houston in every round, but in the final I like New England’s defense to win out against Houston’s superior offense. New England will win 1-0.
Your thoughts on the MLS playoffs and predictions for the MLS Cup final?
