MLS (Probably) Inks Another Sponsorship Deal
By: Laurie | January 10th, 2008
And the money continues to trickle into MLS.
Rumor is that the Chicago Fire have signed a sponsorship deal with Best Buy.
You know. Best Buy. The electronics store which, when my husband and I wanted to buy a simple stereo for a TV-free room, tried to sell us an $8,000 home entertainment system. That Best Buy.
No dollar figure yet, but here are details according to Luis Arroyave, the ultimate source for all things Fire:
The Fire becomes the eighth MLS team to sign a jersey sponsor along with Real Salt Lake (XanGo), the Los Angeles Galaxy (Herbalife), the New York Red Bulls (Red Bull), Toronto FC (BMO Financial Group), Chivas USA (Comex), Houston Dynamo (Amigo Energy), and the Columbus Crew (ICI Paints).
If you’re trying to guess how much the deal is worth, keep in mind that RSL has a four-year deal with XanGo reportedly worth between $4 million and $5 million, the Dynamo’s four-year deal with Amigo Energy is worth $7.5 million, and the Galaxy is getting between $3.5 million and $5 million a year through 2011 from Herbalife.
For business strategy theorists, Best Buy is planning to expand to Mexico. Chicago has a certain Cuauhtémoc Blanco on the roster. Fill in the blanks.
And as an LA Galaxy fan, I just have one thing to say. Can their rebellious fans draw extra leaves on their new logo and have it mean something? I think not. We win.

It’s about time more MLS teams got jersey sponsors. That said, the Best Buy logo will look pretty tacky on the Fire jersey.

I agree w/ ben on this one. The logo & jersey is not a good combination at all.
