MLS Thursday Night: Fire vs Revs & Galaxy vs Earthquakes (plus Yallop vs Lalas)
By: Daryl | April 3rd, 2008
MLS Primetime is back baby, and in double header format too. It’s Chicago Fire vs New England Revolution on ESPN2 this evening, followed by LA Galaxy vs San Jose Earthquakes. Even better, there’ll be no Dave O’Brien. So MLS fans can actually listen to the commentary without theirs ears bleeding this season.
The first game is a rematch of the 2007 Eastern Conference championship. New England beat their MLS Cup nemesis Houston Dynamo at the weekend, but they in turn are Chicago’s bogey team having beaten them in the playoffs for the last three seasons.
New England are without Taylor “dude-your-jersey-is-too-small-we-can-see-your-heartbeat” Twellman after the striker tore his medial meniscus, and also Steve Ralston who dislocated his shouldber. Double ouchy. So much for the old guard, but Steve Nicol does have young Gambian Sainey Nyassi, who not only has a name that sounds a bit like Samir Nasri, but also scored the fizzy drink MLS goal of the week on opening day.
Chicago had a so-so start, relying on a late late long range left footed strike from Cuauhtemoc Blanco to get a 1-1 draw against RSL. But with the DP that delivers we can expect Fire to put on a decent show in their first home game of 2008.
Afterwards we have LA Galaxy vs San Jose Earthquakes. The big spenders vs the expansion team. David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Ruud Gullit, Abel Xavier and all the other big names that lost 4-0 to Colorado Rapids on Saturday (except Carlos Ruiz, who was injured, possibly by karma) will be looking to get their season started for real. But in the opposition dugout sits Frank Yallop. You could argue he got a bad deal as Galaxy coach, with Alexi Lalas trading away players and then blaming Yallop for the bad results. A win tonight would be a great start for San Jose’s second shot at MLS, some vindication for Yallop, and a bloody nightmare for Lalas.

I’m gonna stand up for Dave O’Brien for a second. I know he wasn’t very good. But he wasn’t put in a good position, either. He’s a baseball guy. Baseball guys shouldn’t be doing soccer. But ESPN fell for the same marketing mistake that MLS did when MLS said, “Let’s cater to non-soccer fans and bring them in” instead of catering to the loyal soccer fan who wants an enhanced experience. So O’Brien, who’s a pro, did the best he could. But he’s not a soccer guy. Not his fault. You wouldn’t ask a ball-winning central defender to play attacking mid. So don’t ask a baseball guy to do soccer.
That’s all.

You know what, Fitz? Good point. You get a +1 for that. Too bad O’Brien already had a -9 coming in. Tommy O’Brien had a -12 and Wynalda had a -2 (he wasn’t so bad, actually).
