Red Bull Park Lives!

By: Martha | November 29th, 2007

RB Park. The 14 of us who are bothered to care about the New York Red Bulls (or, if you prefer, Red Bull New York) spend most of this past season glued to the now-yanked Red Bull Park Webcam, watching the new stadium go up. By which I mean “watching trucks drive aimlessly around on a huge, empty lot, during which not a single hole was dug, foundation laid, or stone put in place.”

Not surprisingly, the projected opening date has slipped back several times, from summer 2008 to fall 2009 and, most recently, to maybe some time in 2010. For those of you playing along at home, that’s at least two more freaking seasons with 8000 of our closest friends in the friendly confines of cavernous Giants Stadium.

Earlier this month, though, things started moving again. First, RBNY bought out former partner AEG’s share of the new stadium, a move that gave the club complete control over the ground’s design, evidentially a source of disagreement between the two parties. And now, finally, construction is set to begin (again), with a slightly modified design. The (revised) Red Bull Park will have a cozy capacity of 25,189, and will feature a partial roof that will cover every darn seat. Unfortunately, it’s still going to be in Harrison, New Jersey and will, as far as I can tell, be just as hard to get to from Manhattan if you don’t have a car as the Meadowlands. Sigh.

According to Red Bulls managing director Marc de Grandpre, the place is going to be ready for action in summer 2009, a date you’d be advised to take with a grain of salt or 40.

You can take the PATH train from WTC to Harrison.

Also, I’ll believe this stadium is going to happen when I’m sitting in it.

Red Bull Park is probably not to be built. The club no longer keeps up dates or data on the new stadium posted. Web sites on it are dead. Would not supprize me if Giant Stadium just gets renamed when the new footbal stadium is completed.
