Say Hello to the Colorado Arsenal
By: Bob | February 1st, 2007
A couple days ago we all had some fun dreaming up new names for Real Salt Lake if the club moves to another city – my personal favorite was RomaPete’s contribution of Deportivo Detroit. We were all making fun of Major League Soccer’s tendency to borrow nicknames from clubs around the world, of course. This trend might just continue if you are to believe the rumor mill that is saying that the Colorado Rapids are going to announce Friday that they are set to become the Colorado Arsenal – or possibly Arsenal Colorado, but does the order really matter? On behalf of Real Salt Lake, Chivas USA and the Houston Dynamo, let’s all welcome Colorado to the club.
UPDATE: No name change but a partnership instead.

No more Crapids? Why make the change now after the team has been around for a few years?

The Arsenal. Playing at Dick’s. What humor potential we have.
Too bad I’m already blogging about LA.

I don’t know, I kinda like Arsenal Colorado better than Colorado Rapids. It’s about time MLS had some proper football names instead of arena football and wusa names.
Wizards and Rapids and Bears…oh my!

Maybe they’re trying to trick people into thinking it’s the hockey team, with those colors…

Either a hockey team or West Ham. Or Aston Villa.

Um….weak.

But there is no historical arsenal of weaponry in CO, is there? Unless you count Owl Farm of a few years ago. How about “Cannibal (pronounced kan-ni-bawl, of course) FC”? Or maybe “Rocky Mountain Highs”? Arsenal Colorado. Bleargh and Pfft.

GEcko–the best place to hide your best weapons are inside mountains. Have you learned nothing from Bond movies?
oh, and NORAD

The new stadium was built on some land that was once part of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, where they made chemical weapons. So there is an arsenal involved somewhere…

S. Gecko—Bowling for Columbine much? The biggest weapons factory in the country is in Littleton, Colorado, just outside of Denver.

I’ve never really been in love with the Kansas City Wizard’s name, but every time a crappy second-rate allusion to a European club gets into the MLS, I begin to dislike it less and less.
…here’s to hoping we won’t suddenly see Athletic Club Kansas City pop up directly after I post this comment.

Colorado Arsenal?
Absolutely disgraceful. Why rip off an existing team’s name when your league already suffers severe credibility and image problems?
It’s unoriginal and obvious.

the rumor is they have an alliance with Arsenal. And it’s Arsenal Colorado FC btw not Colorado Arsenal.

I love the name change! As an avid football (soccer) fan I like the move. What some uneducated “soccer” fans don’t appreciate is the credibility the name change brings to the club. It’s not a cheap bite out of an English team’s backside, it’s an affiliation we gain. Arsenal is one of the world’s top football teams. This means we are going to be the little brother to a perenial football power house. What were we before? The Rapids without an identity. Now at least we have something to build on. Good Job Stan!! GO ARSENAL COLORADO FC!!!!!!

Since the “brother” club in London is nicknamed “The Gunners” (as they were founded by workers at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich), Colorado needs a similar nickname. Since the Rocky Mountain Arsenal made chemical weapons, I propose “The Gassers”, and additionally “The only football team banned by the Geneva Convention.” Home fans when they travel might supply themselves with gas masks, etc.
In the interests of full disclosure, I’m a member of Hoops Nation. A sawbuck for a bumper sticker, a t-shirt, and an autographed picture of Bobby Rhine. What a deal.

DONT LIKE THE IDEA, their is only one arsenal, they will be like the American arsenal, shoudnt do it, the club has heritage and sovereignty that will be cheapened by this , not for it at all

Just like to say that they have not
“chosen Aston Villa colours to go with that name”
as said above.
The colour is taken from Arsenal FC’s ‘redcurrent’ jerseys worn last year to commemorate the last season in Highbury. (Arsenal wore these colours in the firt year at highbury)Posted from

You guys dont seem to be up to speed about why this is happening.
Its kind of an alliance where young Arsenal players will go to Colorado for experience and promising Colorado plyaers will be sent to Arsenal to see if they can makle it. Its a bit like the deal Arsenal already have with beveren in Belgium, where Eboue and Song came from. Its something to do with the guy who owns Colorado negotiating this partnership thing, where Colorado Arsenal acts as a kind of feeder club to Arsenal and gets Arsenals young players to see what they got.
Never know, could have the next Fabregas doin his stuff in Colorado for a year or two soon.Posted from

This “rebranding” is due to a partnership being put into effect between the rapids and arsenal. personally, i love the idea. sorry, but “the rapids” is the worst name ever, and their unis/colors just plain sucked.

Fatboy & others – You’ll notice this post was made on Feb. 1 before the details were out. We’ll have another post about it later today after the official press conference.
Thanks for the comments and for stopping by the site.

Villa’s colours, eh? Ger, probably A Villa will also announce an agreement with this team later!

I got a better one…. the ROCKY MOUNTAIN Arsenal after the mountain range of the same name which will include the soon to be empty Salt Lake region. I like the “old school” colours that this team will use!

That’s awesome. Haha, The Colorado Arsenal. Good luck in the league and stuff partners.

The colours look like Argentina’s Arsenal to the Latino community according to the local radio shows!

Why not simply call them Colorado FC the reds for short? Change the uni red and name them after the state. It is a pretty natural name choice and it establishes a meaningful tradition by connecting the club with the land itself. Genius if I say so myself.
No idea for a mascot though.Posted from
