Soccer Experts Weigh in on David Beckham Deal

By: Bob | January 15th, 2007

stalloneeverton.jpgAs much as some of us would just like it to all just go away, the American sports media is still in All Beckham, All the Time mode. While the tired, played out scribes roll out their traditional anti-soccer rants that are normally only reserved for World Cup years, others in the media are willing to acknowledge that they don’t know much about the Beautiful Game. Instead, they choose to defer to experts like Giorgi Armani and Sylvester Stallone to tell us how Becks will do for the LA Galaxy.

Let’s start with Armani, who among other things helped design the England uniforms that made Beckham look so sexy to so many hormone-ridden girls in Asia.

“If (reports that the deal is worth $250 million) are true, then he has done the right thing. And I think he wants to be an actor, not a footballer,” Armani, who has designed the England soccer team’s outfits in recent years, told reporters on the sidelines of Milan’s fashion shows.

“He is a very handsome man and his football career could be nearing an end,” he said. “Also look at his wife…I saw her at Tom Cruise’s wedding and she is a very bubbly lady,” he said.

If by bubbly he means someone who dresses like a two-bit slut than he might be right. You also have to question his assessment about Beckham becoming an actor. Have you ever heard Becks speak? There aren’t many parts in silent films these days.

As for Sly Stallone, his appearance in Escape to Victory and his ability to sit through 90 minutes of Everton football this weekend has helped him to determine that Beckham will be a “big hit” in the United States.

Said Stallone: “I haven’t met him yet, but I might just put him in my next Rambo film
and chase him round the jungle for a couple of months”

Now that is a delightful image! Stallone always works best when he has a pretty on-screen love interest.

Maybe Armani is right after all. Stallone has proven that you don’t need to know how to speak and act to have a successful movie career. It is only a matter of time before Beckham gets a star on Hollywood Boulevard for his part in The Game’s new movie, End it Like Beckham’s Career.

I wouldn’t pay any attention to Stallone’s opinion of Beckham’s move, but he proved he was a real good sport when he turned up at Everton, getting involved in everything and he got a good reception.

Personally, I want to know what Marcelo Balboa thinks about all this.
