Stan Collymore Laces up his Boots; David Beckham not Hanging his up

stan-collymore.jpgLoyal and/or disloyal readers of this blog, please do us a favor by putting an entry into your Outlook calendar for November 4, 2006. Your entry should state the following: “Check to see if Stan Collymore is, indeed, one of the best strikers in England today.”

One month is the amount of time that the former Crystal Palace – Southend, – Nottingham Forest – Liverpool – Aston Villa –Fulham – Leicester – Bradford -Real Oviedo striker believes it will take for him to get into shape and to make his triumphant return to the Premiership where he will be able to “stand side by side with any striker in the country.” Never mind the fact that he hasn’t played since 2001 and that his personal life makes Joey Barton look like a saint by comparison. Collymore thinks he can comeback stronger than ever based on what he saw at the World Cup this summer.

“I went to the World Cup as a punter. I didn’t see any players that made me think ‘I can’t do that’. It might sound big-headed but I still believe that I am the best.”

Having watched England’s games too, we also came away with the conclusion that we could play as well as their forwards did, but we still are a bit skeptical that a 35-year-old with talents that diminished more than half a decade ago will find a home on a Premiership side. Let’s check back on this a month from now, ok?

Meanwhile, another player with diminishing talents says that reports that he will retire in two years are erroneous. David Beckham’s spokesman denies that his client has plans to hang them up in the near future, especially since he still hasn’t made his much speculated appearance in the United States’ Major League Soccer.

No less of a soccer authority than People magazine has reported that MLS, a league not exactly overflowing in money, is going to fork over $100 million to bring Beckham’s limited game to the States.

If that doesn’t inspire Collymore, Pele, Beckenbauer and anybody else who can still stand upright and kick a ball to come back, we don’t know what will.
