The World’s Glitziest Pub Team

You may think that Los Angeles Galaxy are the starriest team in LA, what with Beckham and Landycakes and er, Abel Xavier. But there’s another team in the region with twice the star wattage. They even have a better name: Hollywood United. Described by The Daily Telegraph as “the world’s glitziest pub team,” Hollywood United was founded 12 years ago by a group of Brits living in the California sunshine. It was all very low key, until Vinnie Jones (who played for Wimbledon when they were good, and Chelsea when they weren’t so good) came to Hollywood for “Gone in 60 Seconds” and got himself involved.

Now the teamsheet is a revolving cast of World Cup winners, ex-pros, actors, musicians, filmmakers and the like. Pictured are: Richard Gough, Frank LeBoeuf, Danny Cannon (”Goal!” director), Jimmy-Jean Louis (the Haitian dude from “Heroes”), David Jones, Ian Carrington and Aussie actor Anthony LaPaglia. The squad rotation also sees Alexi Lalas and Eric Wynalda make occasional appearances, as do Ralf Little (”The Royle Family”) Steve Jones (of The Sex Pistols fame) Mike Myers, Jason Statham, Woody Harrelson, and Luke and Owen Wilson.

It’s even possible that Becks himself could one day make an appearance in the blue of Hollywood United. If only someone would give us a tongue in cheek quote. Oh wait, here’s Alexi Lalas: “Well, he would have to prove he’s good enough to make our team,” Lalas jokes. “We’ve got some very good players. I know he’s played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, but I’m not sure he could play for a team of this magnitude. He’s certainly not playing centre back, that’s for sure.”
