Toronto Finally End Drought
By: Daryl | September 23rd, 2007It’s not all bad news in Canadian soccer. Toronto FC broke their MLS goal drought yesterday when Miguel Canizalez (pictured) finally found the net at home to Columbus Crew, to much cheering by the good people at BMO Field. Unfortunately TFC still lost, as Crew came back to win 2-1. But at least the excruciating drought is over. The final total for TFC’s barren spell is now in the books at 824 minutes, an MLS record that will likely stand for a very very long time.
824 minutes is 13.73 hours, which I’m sure you’ll agree is long time to play football without achieving the object of the game. More significantly, 824 minutes is just over nine football matches (9.156 to be exact.) Nine football matches without scoring, plus enough spare change to account for all the injury time.
It’s never easy being an expansion team. Via the insane magic of the expansion draft you get all the players the other clubs don’t want. Throw an injury crisis in for good measure and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. But TFC have actually had decent spells this season and – despite this unfortunate brush with history – TFC isn’t even the worst team in MLS right now. Both LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake have less points.
At least now Toronto can put the gigantic goal drought albatross behind them and try and put together a decent finish to the 2007 MLS season. After all, it’s only 88 minutes since they last scored…
