POLL: Fernando Torres – Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

By: Dave Martinez | March 14th, 2010

soc_a_torres_412The inevitable has happened; flirtations with failure this season have given the Reds brightest star pause about his future. Though Liverpool continue to cling to the hopes of a top four finish this season, Fernando Torres can read the tea leaves, and he doesn’t seem to like what his future holds. Especially if things do not change.

During a press conference, the young Spanish superstar was asked about his state of being during this tumultuous season, and the answer spoke volumes.

From The Guardian:

“Being in the Champions League is not so important for me,” admitted Torres of his manager Rafael Benítez’s goal of a top-four finish. “What is really important is that the club makes an effort and brings in important players to improve the quality of the squad. I want to be fighting for the Premier League, the Champions League or the Europa League, but to do this we need signings to come. We need four or five top-class players to compete, players better than the ones we have . . . I think the club deserves to win again, but at this point they know they are a long way away.

“The fans are worried that players are going to leave and that’s a problem. But I think the club will go the right way. Since Christian Purslow took over [as chief executive], we have signed a big new sponsorship deal and money has come in. So I think things will move forward.”

Veiled threat or is the youngster being realistic? Can Liverpool actually be content playing for fourth every season, or are they looking to shoot up the ladder and break that glass ceiling? The decision may cost the club it’s biggest name. Mind you, Torres is locked in for three years at Liverpool, but we all know the weight a contract holds now adays – especially if your star player is unhappy.

Have a vote ladies and gents’. What does the future hold for Mr. Torres?

I think he'll stay. Its not like he's come from Man united where he's used to winning everything. He obviously loves anfield and he said he feels at home there and you can tell he has a lot of respect for what the club and fans have done for him. But then the press have to print a story that will sell the papers, whether its true or not.

Where would he go? Surely not man u or real. Barca may not want him. Milan maybe? I don't see many possibilities though..,

I think he will stay one more season. His comments point to that much... But if Liverpool don't buy or improve their situation you can bet your life he will leave the season after.

“Being in the Champions League is not so important for me,”

Sound like his ambitions are just right for a club like Liverpool.
