Promoted St. Pauli Take On the Bundesliga Allstars and David Hasselhoff
By: Jan | May 9th, 2010Fun times left the Bundesliga. Fun times are heading the Bundesliga’s way again next season.
German second division side FC St. Pauli won promotion to the Bundesliga with a 1-2 loss to Paderborn today. It was merely a formality, as their nearest rival Augsburg would have needed to overturn a 14 goal deficit. As such the team was already looking back on a week long party marathon. One that inspired the above post match celebration.
If you don’t know who or what FC St. Pauli is, then take a quick look at this video for an extra bit of context.
After the final whistle had blown, St. Pauli’s players headed straight to the locker room, just to re-enter the pitch to AC DC’s Hell’s Bells, the club’s intro music, with one half of the players wearing swapped jerseys of other Bundesliga players for a quick St. Pauli vs Bundesliga Allstars match.
While being heavy underdogs in the first place, the fake Allstar’s cause wasn’t helped by the despicable antics of David Jarolim, captain of fierce city rivals HSV. Even before the first ball was kicked, he had to act like a “typical German”, with the referee having no other choice but to pay tribute to the infamous “simultaneous double yellow“, a referee once showed a St. Pauli and Mainz player. Just that a Hamburg player of course deserves a double red. David Jarolim ends his forgettable day by feigning injury. Reduced to ten men, St. Pauli then made light work of the Allstars with some fluid passing, leaving the helpless Bundesliga players tackling nothing but air. The winning goal looked suspiciously offside though.
After giving their fans and the other Bundesliga clubs a taste of what’s to come next season, the players capped off their celebrations with a proper dose of David Hasselhoff’s Looking for Freedom. A song that has – so far – been criminally underused in German football folklore.
