News from Romania: Another Fine Reason for Fines
By: Bob | August 29th, 2006
We’re five matches into the Romanian league season and already we’re on a record pace for fines being handed out to players. We’ve told you already about players being punished for victory and players being punished for letting in a meaningless goal and now there is news of an entire team being punished for not trying.
The owner of Farul Constanta has dished out record fines in a league where it isn’t the day after a match if there aren’t fines imposed. Gheorghe Bosanceanu has fined his players a combined total of more than 100,000 euros ($128,100) for their poor play in a couple of league matches.
“They (the players) did not fight against Urziceni and invited Steaua to attack,” Gheorghe Bosanceanu told reporters. “They proved they can play good soccer in previous matches but they showed a lack of fight against Steaua.”
The old lack of fight excuse is a convenient one, but after watching the clip below we’d say it is more of a lack of hand-eye coordination on the part of Farul Constanta’s keeper than a lack of effort. If you have ever played keeper in your life, you might want to send your resume to Mr. Boseanceanu, pronto. Just bring some extra cash when you go to Romania. Chances are you are going to end up paying to play.
