News from Romania: Ho Hum, Three more Coaches Out
By: Bob | September 25th, 2006
It was business as usual this past weekend in Romania with the owner of a club receiving a 12-game suspension for attacking referees, two coaches resigning and the suspended owner firing his entire staff. In between, there were even some matches played.
The main character in the Romanian drama this week is Universitatea Craiova owner Adrian Mititelu, who looks like a badass in that picture and who was slapped with a hefty suspension by the league after he charged into the referees’ changing room and made some threats that were less than pleasant. Just because he is set to serve a 12-game suspension doesn’t mean Mititelu plans to sit back passively and watch his team suck. No, he took out his wrath on his coaching staff by firing them all. Included in the bloodletting was player-coach Ovidiu Stanga, who you’ll recall got into some hot water for head butting one of his own players after a match. Is there a more dysfunctional club in the universe than Universitatea Craiova?
Meanwhile, two more coaches stepped down after their teams got off to starts that even make Universitatea Craiova’s look good. Vaslui coach Gigi Multescu threw in the towel after guiding his team to five points from nine matches. He’ll be joined in the unemployment line by Momcilo Vukotic, who has left Farul Constanta. Someone should tell these gentlemen that Universitatea Craiova is hiring.
For those scoring at home, there have been five managerial changes already in Romania’s young season and we’re currently giving even odds that we’ll see double digit coaching changes by year’s end.
