News from Romania: It doesn’t Pay to Win

C_poliiasi[1].jpgIt wouldn’t be a real week here at The Offside without news regarding financial trouble in our much beloved Romanian football league.

The problem stems from Politehnica Iasi’s surprisingly strong start. You would think that two consecutive wins would have club officials jumping for joy, but instead it has left them scrambling for ways to reward their players. Like most teams in Romania, Politehnica Iasi’s bank account looks more like yours and less like Chelsea’s, so bonuses for victories are out of the question.

“How could we pay them for so many wins?” asks coach Ionut Popa. “I plan to award my players with free Mondays instead.”

Apparently it wasn’t in Politehnica Iasi’s budget to win two games this year, but at least the players will be able to get into discounted movie matinees on Mondays following victories.
