News from Romania: It is not OK for a Coach to Head Butt his own Player
By: Bob | September 19th, 2006
It has been a few weeks since we reported news from our favorite league, but don’t let the absence of posts deceive you, there has been plenty going on in Romanian football. The top story today is the suspension for four games of Universitatea Craiova’s player-coach Ovidiu Stinga.
Following his team’s 3-3 draw last week against Politehnica Iasi, Stinga reportedly headbutted his own player, Andrei Ionescu, because the 18-year-old forward made some mistakes during the match. Now that is coaching that would make Zinedine Zidane quite proud!
Stinga, who used to play for PSV Eindhoven, was also fined 1,334 pounds. His club will appeal the ruling because Ionescu didn’t file a complaint. Can’t say we blame the guy. His coach would probably have castrated him if he had filed a complaint.
Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to track down the actual head butt, but at the very end of the video below you can see a bit of Ionescu’s reaction to things.
