Romania Player Ionel Ganea attacks Assistant Referee
By: Bob | August 27th, 2007
You have to give Ionel Ganea some credit. He wasn’t going to get sent off the pitch without at least earning his red card. In the 70th minute of his team’s match against Rapid Bucharest Sunday, the Politehnica Stiinta Timisoara striker was about to be shown his second yellow card after the Linesman Dorin Buzura narced to the referee about Ganea’s foul. As you can see in the video above, Ganea didn’t take too kindly to this. He eventually had to be removed from the pitch by four policemen who evidently were braver than the other referee who didn’t exactly leap to his mate’s defense.

What a travesty! It looks to me like Ganea was wearing the captain’s armband. Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the rules clearly state that “only the team’s captain is allowed to choke an official”?

The scene was shocking, i’ve seen the match live. I know ganea and I really thought that he’ll kill the referee.

Unreal that the match official walked away and seemed completely disinterested while the assault was obviously still going on. Why would he not have issued a red card at the very least?
