Community Service for Dida’s Best Buddy
By: Daryl | November 4th, 2007Robert McHendry, better known as “that Celtic fan who made slight contact with Dida, causing him to belatedly fall to the ground” (video above, in case you somehow haven’t seen it) finally knows what his punishment is. Though Celtic were already fined £25,000 by UEFA for the security breach and Dida received a two (later reduced to one) game ban for his theatrics, McHendry was at the mercy of Glasgow Sheriff Court. And yesterday the court handed down a verdict of 120 hours community service for breach of the peace, which seems about right since he didn’t actually hurt anyone. But since his crime was committed on the football field, maybe that’s also where he should do his time.
Clearly McHendry had an effect on Dida, causing the goalkeeper’s inner diver/timewaster/cheat to emerge. So maybe UEFA could use the Scot as a sort of interrogation device by bringing him face to face with players suspected of diving and/or simulation and observing the results.
The suspected players can be brought into UEFA headquarters, where McHendry will just tap them on the shoulder and then we see whether they dive to the floor and roll around or not. First players I’d call would be Pippo Inzaghi, Arjen Robben and - as a control subject - Vinnie Jones.
