Dundee’s Andy McLaren Shown Three Red Cards in a Match
By: Bob | December 18th, 2006
During his team’s tilt with Clyde on Saturday, Dundee striker Andy McLaren achieved a rare hat-trick: three red cards. McLaren, who joined Dundee this summer and who had a cup of coffee with Reading in 2000 before testing positive for pot and coke and admitting he had an alcohol problem, showed that anger management isn’t really one of his strengths either.
From the Scotsman:
The madness began as Dundee were fighting back after Gary Arbuckle and a Stephen O’Donnell spot kick gave Clyde a 2-0 half-time lead.
McLaren was booked as he wrestled for the ball with keeper David Hutton after Gavin Swankie had netted a penalty to reduce the deficit.
But McLaren then hit out at Clyde defender Eddie Malone and was sent off by referee Dougie McDonald. McLaren then seemed to punch Clyde’s Michael McGowan before racing up the tunnel. Although the referee did not see the incident, it was reported to him by his linesman and McLaren received his second red card when he was called to the referee’s room. It is understood he was given a third red for kicking a hole in the door as he left.
Who would have known that kicking a hole in the door of the referee’s room is an infraction worthy of a red card? Head butting the door is a definite red card, but a mere kick really should be a yellow.
Dundee manager Alex Rae said after the match: “I am going to sit down and talk to him because indiscipline is costing us.”
The cost alone of fixing that door probably is about the same as what Dundee could pay for a new right back.
In McLaren’s defense, he has been under some strain after his son was seriously injured in an attack in Glasgow and that could help to explain how he could set the unofficial record for most red cards received in a match not officiated by Graham Poll.

To be fair. Poll only gave his guy 3 yellows. He’s still in training for this sort of performance.

Haha, nicely put. Much respect for getting three red cards. And if my Class 4 Alberta Soccer Association referee badge tells me anything, it’s that 3 red cards is categorically impossible, and that everyone in England should stick to playing soccer, not officiating.

just a quick message for sam as a qualified referee i would like to inform him that the referee was scottish and that in scotland the rules are different. in england it is reported as a red card for violent conduct plus 2 further offences reported as the same incident. in scotland each offence gets reported seperately so it would count as 3 reds
