Hearts Attack against Old Firm

By: Bob | February 15th, 2007

romanovhearts.jpgIf it weren’t for the forever loco Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov the only suspense in the Scottish Premier League this season would be whether Celtic finishes ahead of Rangers by 19 points or 22 points. Fortunately Romanov is still around and he is still keeping us all entertained.

In a lengthy interview published in the Daily Record, the Hearts chief made it clear why the Old Firm teams always finish ahead of everyone else.

‘Celtic and Rangers? Even Kaunas are a match for them on the pitch.

‘They have turned football into a type of showbusiness with their underhand games.

‘They buy off players and referees. When it comes to weaker teams then nobody can help.

‘But if two opponents are equally matched then the referees can have a real influence on the outcome.’

And asked why Eduard Malofeev failed to win a game in his four-week period as Hearts boss last year, Romanov said: ‘Well, if you’ve got five people in the team working for Rangers and Celtic, what do you expect?’

The irony in all this is that Romanov’s Hearts team has no less than 13 players on loan from his Lithuanian club Kaunas and yet they are still 24 points behind Celtic and 5 points behind Rangers. Those referees must really be effective at cheating.

The other irony is that Romanov is still in a dispute with the Scottish Football Association after he was fined last year for, you guessed it, complaining about the bias of referees. Romanov is now denying he ever questioned the integrity of the Old Firm since, you know, he would never ever do anything to bring ill repute to the sport.

Yes, we at the Old Firm take match-fixing to an epic (read: Italian) proportions. Just ask Steven Pressley (read: free agent Elvis).
