Old Firm Match Postponed
By: Martha | December 31st, 2007
As Ian reported us yesterday, three matches were almost immediately postponed in the wake of the tragic death of Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell: ‘Well’s next two games have been pushed back, as well as Gretna’s next home match, because they’re currently sharing a ground with Motherwell, and the clubs don’t want to disrupt the tributes to which the ground is playing host.
Now, though, another one has join the list: The Old Firm match between Celtic and Rangers, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed at the request of Celtic, when O’Donnell spent five years with the club early in his career. In addition, Celtic’s star striker Scott McDonald (seeing paying tribute at the top of the post) played with O’Donnell at Motherwell for the past four years, and many other players on both clubs have connections to him.
The SPL agreed to postpone the match after meeting with Rangers and getting their consent, and should be applauded for their willingness to recognize that, sometimes, business as usual just won’t work.
