Tragedy in Scotland

Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell died today after collapsing near the end of his team’s 5-3 win over Dundee. The midfielder, who was 35, was about to be substituted when he collapsed, and received treatment briefly on the pitch before being taken to hospital; it’s unclear at this point whether he died at the hospital or before he reached it.

As Ian observes over at the SPL blog, the this the second vibrant, young player we’ve lost on the pitch in just four months; as with the death of Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta, the loss of O’Donnell is an unspeakable tragedy, not only for his friends and family, but for all of those who are about football in general.
