A Golden Ball for Buffon?

By: Bob | November 7th, 2006

gianluigi-buffon-wc.jpgWe’ve learned before to take rumors involving Gianluigi Buffon with a grain of salt, but this is another juicy one. Martha on the must-read Italy Offside blog has uncovered reports that Buffon will be named winner of the Ballon d’Or at the end of this month.

The Juventus and Italy goalkeeper had a great year last year and, if true, would become just the second keeper to ever win Europe’s most prestigious award reportedly beating out my pick Fabio Canavarro and Thierry Henry (the FIFPro Player of the Year being nowhere in sight).

Scanning the increasing number of comments about the players who were on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, I don’t see anyone advocating for Buffon to win the award. Perhaps we all have a bias against goalkeepers?

What do you think? Did Buffon have the type of year to warrant the award?

I just said this on Martha’s blog, but I think this rumor is just an extension of thoughts about the Goldmember kit he wore in the World Cup final…

    I think he deserves it.
He conceded almost no goals in the world cup, except for the penalties.
He is an extraordinary keeper with much skill and talent, and I think he should be recognized for it.
