A Name to Remember: Yoann Gourcuff
By: Bob | September 14th, 2006
We’re always on the lookout for the next big thing. Before any other kid on the block had a pet rock, we had an entire family of pet rocks. Before the rest of the world awoke to news that Sergio Aguero is better than sliced bread, we already had him buttered and toasted. Or something like that.
When we watched a bit of AC Milan’s Champions League match victory over AEK Athens, we couldn’t help but come away impressed with the play of 20-year-old Frenchman Yoann Gourcuff. He is our next big thing.
The wunderkind playmaker came to Milan this summer after a stint with Stade Rennes. The first thing you’ll notice when you watch him play is that he could be Kaka’s twin. The second thing you’ll notice is that he has the potential to be better than Kaka.
We’re not quite ready to proclaim him the Next Zidane, but it is exciting to see a young another young player introduced to the world stage. If you haven’t seen him play, the requisite introductory YouTube video and soundtrack are below.

O.k., he’s fabulous.
But I confess to loving the guy in the middle of the video who leaps into the air, legs apart, so the ball ends up at Gourcuff’s feet. Was that Ukata? I couldn’t get a good enough image. Either way, I would have loved to see the play live! How often do they practice THAT?!
