Adrian Mutu Fails Drugs Test. Again.

By: Daryl | January 28th, 2010

Adrian MutuApparently Adrian Mutu is a slow learner. Way back in 2004, the then Chelsea striker tested positive for cocaine and so had his contract ripped up by the Blues and was banned from football for seven months. FIFA then ruled that he owed Chelsea £15 million for breaching his contract, a ruling Mutu is still fighting.

So the whole experience is not something you’d imagine Mutu – now playing, and playing well, for Fiorentina – would wish to repeat. However… today he tested positive again, and will likely face a second ban.

To be fair to Mutu, it wasn’t cocaine again. This time it was sibutramine an appetite suppressant usually used to treat obesity. But Adrian Mutu is not obese, and sibutramine is on the WADA list of banned substances. So basically, Adrian Mutu is in trouble again.

According to reports in Italy, Mutu is facing a ban of somewhere between one and four years. At the age of 31, such a ban could mean the end of his career. That’s not just my idle speculation. That’s what his agent says.

So Chelsea may be waiting a while for that £15 million. Unless Mutu has an as yet untapped talent for picking lottery numbers.

  • Hi, there. I would suggest you continue writing more posts, this would make your blog even more interesting, plus I guess you will get more visitors.

I took sybutramine ... if anything it degrades perfomance ...

I know you tried to write this as humour but as a massive Mutu and Fiorentina fan, this is anything but. I still don't understand weight loss supplements having anything to do with illegality in sports, causing a ban, etc. but suffice to say that I look at my Mutu autographed jersey on the wall and say "why Adrian, why?" I best stop writing as tears are starting to flow.

At least it's not drugs. But still... You'd think he'd be more careful.

It sucks because the substance is banned not because of any performance enhancing abilities, but because it has been known to cause heart failure...

WADA is just looking out for the players interests, but perhaps a 1-4 year ban is too harsh?

What the heck does he wants to do with sibutramine??
  • 12-18 months wouldn't be that bad really. You can still train and play footie with your mates to keep fit, and return with an average club and earn an absolute minimum of 10k per week (boohoo).
  • I think the true plot is being missed here. How better to get thin than a nice coke addiction? Clearly this was the purpose all along.

Deep down, Adrian's just a fat kid.
  • I'm pretty sure that sibutramine and cocaine are basically the same thing - they just enhance performance in different aspects of life.

Pretty damaging stuff... If it came to it, he could've gone stateside/Qatar earning $$$ for a couple years, but whatever length ban he may receive he's definitely 'damaged goods' to any renown clubs. Maybe a future return to Dinamo Bucureşti, but it won't pay the bills.
