Christian Vieri’s Stock has dropped a Little Bit
By: Bob | August 29th, 2006
It doesn’t seem that long ago that Christian Vieri moved from Lazio to Inter Milan for a then-record $49 million deal. My, how the times have changed for the Italian striker.
Vieri has signed a one year contact to play with Serie A team Atalanta for a minimum wage of 1,500 euros a month. Sure, Vieri will get more money if he meets incentives for goals and minutes played, but it is still remarkable that a player that was once on top of the world is now in the same tax bracket as MLS development players.
Vieri’s biggest problem, besides an inability to find the back of the net for the past few years and an ego the size of Rome, is a dodgy knee that has kept him off the field and has kept bigger clubs from throwing money his way. It wasn’t that long ago that he was being considered for a spot on the Azzurri, now he is hoping to earn a spot on Atalanta.
As sad as it is to watch such a player free fall from stardom, in a way it is kind of admirable seeing him willing to play for so little money. He must really *heart* the game.
