Clerical Error: The Vatican won’t be a Football Power after all
By: Bob | December 19th, 2006
Put away the rosary beads, don’t even think about buying a replica Bishop’s Hat and by all means keep those priests playing with little balls jokes to yourself. After the story spread earlier this week that the Vatican was interested in forming a football team that could take on the likes of Roma and AC Milan, we learn today that it was all just a big joke.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who is the Cardinal that always is hiding whoopee cushions and playing practical jokes on his brethren liking replacing the communion wafers with wood chips, said that his earlier statements about building a world class, God-inspired team were merely something most people would say after a few too many nips of communion wine.
“It was fantasy fun to spread some cheer and maybe fill half a page of the newspapers,” he said.
“The truth is that it’s impossible. I have other things to do than organize a soccer team.”
This undoubtedly will come as a big disappointment for Italian football, which could use a scandal-free football club owner such as the Catholic Church, but fans can take solace in knowing that the Vatican is still moving forward with plans to take part in the inaugural Clericus Cup in February, while also concentraing on lesser things like delivering salvation.

With their billions in riches the Vatican has the ability to finance a world-class club team. They could easily attract the devout Catholics like Figo and Roberto Carlos.
