Dark Day in Italy

By: Daryl | November 11th, 2007

Atalanta fans demanding the game against Milan be postponedDespite the World Cup victory and Milan’s recent Champions League win, Italian football has seen some terrible times recently. There was the shame of the Calciopoli matchfixing scandal and Juventus’ famous relegation to Serie B in 2006. Then last season there was the death of a policeman during the Palermo-Catania game. Things got even worse today, when 26 year old Lazio fan and DJ Gabriele Sandri was accidentally shot and killed by police while on his way to Milan for the Inter vs Lazio game.

Seems there was a clash between Lazio and Juventus fans at a motorway rest stop, and Sandri was killed while police were trying to restore order. Not sure how shooting people dead helps to restore order, but there you go. The Inter vs Lazio game was abandoned, police chief Vincenzo Giacobbe has called the shooting “a tragic error,” while Lazio chairman Claudio Lotito is asking fans not to blame police. But there’s been fairly widespread violence and a lot of anger towards the authorities, with Atalanta Ultras demanding the postponement of the Atalanta vs Milan game (pictured.)

Martha has been following events as they unfold at Italy Offside, and I would suggest you go there for the latest.
