Did Zlatan Ibrahimovic Get Away With Handball?

By: Daryl | August 31st, 2008

Zlatan Ibrahimovic either a) scored an excellent goal for Internazionale after a one two with Amantino Mancini or b) scored a questionable goal for Internazionale after getting away with handball.

I’ve watched this video more times than I’m prepared to admit in an effort to make a decision, and still can’t call it. I will say this though: while the above video looks mostly innocent, when you watch the second video below (especially the very last replay) and see the Sampdoria players instantly appeal it looks a lot more dubious.

The game eventually finished 1-1 after Gennaro Delvecchio equalized for Sampdoria.

But even if Zlatan did handle that ball then shame on him for being so sneaky. If you’re going to commit the crime of handball you may as well go all out like Paul Scholes so that no one’s left in any doubt.

I think he tries and doesn’t. But its really touch and go.

I, too, have watched this video many many times. I think that he pulls his arm away before the ball touches it - look at the trajectory. Also, players appeal for non-handballs all the time (and non-offsides, and fouls, and whatever), especially in Italy.

But then again, I am a bit biased.

As the saying goes, it’s handball / offside only when the referee says so.

While more subtle and discreet than Mr Scholes’ spectacular effort, it was a shining example of a successfully executed handball.

Maradona “the hand of God”, Paul Scholes “The hand of Idiot, and Desperate Manu”, Zlatan Ibrahimovic The Hand of Mistery” (mistery I couldn solve watched the video 100 times) and a nice goal. He got away with it.

There was a more obvious handball later in the match on Zanetti. I think it was during a corner. It was pretty obvious and Samp should have gotten a penalty.
