Domenech: Materrazi ‘must have a weakness somewhere’
By: Bob | January 29th, 2007
If I thought Marco Materazzi had any brain cells left I would be worried about the effect of suffering two headbutts in less than a year will have on his cognitive abilities. I’m not too concerned about Materazzi’s mental health, but I do find it interesting that the man who provoked Zinedine Zidane’s World Cup rage is the victim of yet another headbutt.
This time the villain in the drama is Sampdoria’s Gennaro Delvecchio, who took exception to Materazzi taking exception to his late challenge against Inter Milan keeper Julio Cesar.
“My reaction was instinctive and all I wanted to do was protect my keeper,” said the 33-year-old who lay on the ground as Delvecchio was sent off.
“I went over to say to him ‘What do you think you’re doing’?. He then pushed me and I didn’t go down. Then he headbutted me and I fell to the ground. He hurt my lip.
“I admit it when I make a mistake, but on this occasion I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Looking at the video, I have to agree with Matterazi, although it does make you wonder what he had to say to put Delvecchio in such a tizzy. Somehow I think it was stronger than “What do you think you’re doing”. Perhaps he’ll pen a book to let the world know the truth.
Speaking of the truth, when in doubt about all matters Matterazi, who better to turn to than France coach Raymond Domenech?
But Domenech told L’Equipe TV that Materazzi “has a habit of falling over easily” before adding mischievously, “he must have a weakness somewhere.”
You can almost picture Domenech rubbing his hands together while in his mind plotting a way to send Materazzi to the guillotine to remove this weakness once and for all.

Well if Domenech says it, it must be true…

There seems to be a constant in this equation, and that is Materazzi. What is he doing/saying to these players that winds them up enough for them to unleash their fury on him? Especially using a weapon as personal as your head. Most incidents on the pitch result in hand bags at ten paces, with a little pushing and shoving at most.
