Drama in Milan as Inter win derby 2-0

By: Rob | January 24th, 2010

The Derby Della Maddonina produced a fair bit of drama today, as you might expect. Going into the game, Milan were six points behind Inter, with a game in hand. Well bad news for those who like close title races – Inter saw off Milan by two goals to win their second game against their inter-city rivals this season.

They had to do it mostly with ten men, after Wesley Sneijder was sent off for mock-applauding the referee and saying some bad words in Italian. They also had Lucio sent off towards the end for a handball, but the Cesar saved the penalty that that resulted in, moving Inter nine points clear at the top.

The scoring had been opened by Milito (above) before Pandev made sure (after the jump) with a direct free kick (pretty sweet against a side that boasts Beckham and Pirlo, eh?)

"And everyone said at that time he should have been sent off as well."

    Siena, my bad.

And he wasn't, in fact, sent off. But Sneijder was.

Jest stating a fact is all.

    va bene!

"Dustin, watch the moviola – all he said was “bravo, bravo.”

I've watched it...do you think he walked up to the referee and just said "bravo, bravo"? I see his mouth moving a lot more than that. I'm only saying we should reserve judgement till we find out what he said, I guess that makes me biased and crazy thinking people are innocent on both sides of the argument until proven guilty.

"Yes, this has never happened in any league before."

Hello? Totti vs Udinese two seasons ago?

alessio that's not the same situation, rooney got the yellow card for commiting a foul then got the second one for clapping, while sneijder got an instant red for complaining
  • Well, I've never seen a straight red given for that before.
  • Dustin, watch the moviola - all he said was "bravo, bravo." Now, it is likely Sneijder said something to the ref about 3 minutes before the card, when the ref blocked a pass to Sneijder near Milan's goal (not quite a scoring opportunity, but nearly). Wesley did have a little fit then.

At the time of the booking though, Sneijder said exactly 2 words, from about 30 feet away.

I know you are like the Ref-Lorax (you speak for the refs), but this guy was just crazy not good. Or at least crazy not consistent. Later in the game, a Milan player similarly shouted at him for not awarding a corner - that player got a pat on the back (literally).
  • AC Milan have no future with this squad . Too many old men trying to show their individual skills. nice to watch but doomed to failure against highly motivated squads.

God help them against Man United

its was very foolish of sneijder???he let his ego get the worst of him. a game like this, the last thing you wanna do is provoke someone. let yourself be provoked. refs are under pressure as well. they have to deal with all nonsense from players as well make crucial decision.
  • Dustin
Lets reserve judgement for what "Sneijder" might have said that's offensive, insulting, or abusive language which would require a straight red.
  • Diane
Yes, he was wrong a lot at both ends of the field, even calling fouls on the wrong player (again on both teams) in a number of interactions.

I dearly wanted Milan to win, but Inter were the better team, and the more driven one, from the starting whistle. Still a very painful defeat.

I'm curious as to whether or not I'm alone in thinking that this game boasted one of the worst refereeing displays in recent memory. As an Inter fan of course I was infuriated by the insta-red that was shown to Sneijder, but as a observer I was equally as displeased with the referee's accidental involvement when the ball bounced off of him not once but twice. Furthermore, while I hate to admit it, this referee managed to miss a blatant handball by Maicon that even the normally un-biased (or unobservant) Fox soccer announcer commented on.

Pirlo's free kicks were terrible today
