El Fenómeno Takes A Shot At Pelé
By: chris | March 17th, 2008
Way too much is made of the ramblings of past legends, whether it be Pele, Maradona, Johan Cruijff, or whomever. For some reason people seem to think the wizardy with their feet translates to wizardy with their brain waves – which is often not the case. Example: Pele. Ronaldo, The Real/Fat/Injured One, appears to agree. He’s sarcastically welcoming Pele’s take on the rest of his career because whatever he says “the opposite comes true”. Burn.
Pele’s original statement:
“I don’t think Ronaldo will be able to be the player he once was. Medicine has made huge progress, but he’s also a few years older now. I would be very happy if he would be able to come back at 100%, but I’m afraid it won’t go that way.”
Ronaldo’s retort:
“He said that I will not come back to play? I am happy that he said this. It is well known that whatever Pele forecasts, the exact opposite comes true.“However I don’t want to make too much of this. Pele is a legend and finds himself in difficult situations, having to answer questions of all kinds.”
So what I ask is, when is all this going to stop making the news? If you want to ask a legendary coach his take on a situation, then I’d sit up and take notice, because at least he made his name with his brain, not his feet. Pele might be a legend and all, but each time he makes the news with a statement it’s reported as the ultimate kibosh being laid down. Ditto for Maradona – whose decision making goes well past questionable, making it even more curious. I understand respecting their contributions, but will never get why such a deal is made over this. Give me Arsene Wenger or Luciano Spalletti’s take on the situation well before I need to hear it from Pele. Medias of the world…..stop the madness.
