Goal of the Year Decade Lists Get A Distinctly Italian Flavor

By: chris | January 7th, 2010

I can’t possibly think in decades, only years. However, it was pointed out in the Clint Dempsey goal a few days back not only was it an early goal of the year, but a nominee for goal of the decade. This is possible since the decade is, oh, seven days old.

So we’ve got two more ‘goal of the decade’ candidates coming from Serie A, submitted by two players who’ve made reputations based on their flair for the spectacular…and the occasional girlfriend with a venereal disease. Actually, they both happen to be from Napoli. First up: Fabio “Mr. Bullshit Goal” Quagliarella.

His goal is, once again, ridiculous – barely even looks before turning and quickly firing – yet wholly unsuprurising. Fabio, aside from having a name which is fun to say, has one of the greatest flairs for the impossible in world football. He does this once every few weeks and could earn a paycheck simply by standing anywhere between 30 and 40 yards from goal.

The other goal comes to us from five-star(!) Milan’s triumph over Genoa, in which Milan won three penalties and Marco Borriello scored twice. Marco is known in Italy for a few things: his incredible technique in the box, his looks (or so the ladies say) and his ex-girlfriend, the very beautiful and very unclean Belen Rodriguez (that link is neither safe for work nor the health of your hard drive), who got him banned a few years back when he was accused of using a ‘banned substance’ which was later found to be her STD cream. How that happened, no one knows…

Marco spent a year at Genoa which was spent largely scoring, much like Quagliarella, ridiculous goals. Milan hasn’t been quite as plentiful, but it appears whenever he gets on the pitch with shirts of the Grifone, he can help himself. Just staggering technique and placement and a virtual carbon copy of the one he scored earlier in the year against Parma:

Feel free to tune in next week, because both are liable to do the same thing all over again.

    Hilarious.
  • The Quagliarella goal is worth watching for the commentator's reaction let alone the goal!

That fool behind the net missed it!

The goals were great, but the best part about the Borriello video has got to be the Milan anthem. Love it.
