Juventus Continues to Fall on its own Sword

By: Bob | August 24th, 2006

logojuve.jpgOne of these days they might actually start playing football again in Italy, but until then all we can do is sit back and watch Juventus try to kill itself and kill interest in its league. Yesterday, FIFA announced that it might ban Italian teams from international competitions if the Italian football federation did not take action against teams trying to appeal their match-fixing penalties in civil court.

Today we learn that, lo and behold, Juventus is planning on doing just such a thing and the Italian football federation is considering adding to the penalties it has already levied on the disgraced team.

While it is anyone’s guess how this is all going to turn out, we can’t help but think it isn’t going to turn out good for anyone other than the lawyers making tons of money filing motions and appeals.

Instead of bending over, taking their punishment, and considering what is best for Italian football, Juventus continues to insist on heading down a self-interested path that in the end could hurt their club even more and certainly will hurt the sport in their country. Juventus has already committed the crime. It is time they suck it up and concentrate on fielding a football team that will restore the good name of the club and restore the faith in the fans that support them.

I think the FIGC may have to relegate them to the uncut grass fields of Serie C2 to teach them a lesson. Besides, their 1/4 filled stadium will actually fit in at that level.

This all makes me wonder how much corruption in the world of football is there that has gotten away with it and we’ll never know of.
For instance, we could swear that such and such play was a “dive” and in no way was it a penalty.
May be some things are just designed by a higher power, one that’s “not so much higher than ourselves though”.
