Juventus is stuffing the Lawyers’ Pockets
By: Bob | August 1st, 2006
I’ll admit that I have trouble following the match-fixing scandal in Italy. When sports end up in the courtroom I am usually the first one to tune out. Lawyers scare me and the only time I ever want to see the inside of a courtroom is when I get called up for jury duty.
While I won’t be attending any of the hearings regarding Juventus, I will keep an eye on what is passing for Italian justice. Today Juventus announced that it is appealing its appeal of its alleged match fixing. Follow that? Good, neither do I.
Just last week an appeals court upheld a previous ruling that found Juventus guilty. The appeals court did reduce Juve’s punishment from 30 points to 17 points when the new season starts. Did this satisfy the club? Hardly.
After the second ruling, Juventus said the sanctions were still “excessive” and vowed to appeal “through all possible courts.”
No word yet if this case will make it to esteemed courts such as the People’s Court and Judge Judy, but the current crop of players are fleeing faster than you can say Patrick Vieira.
